JV Girls Bulldogs Win Greater Hartford Parochial Championship
February 28th, 2024
St. Matthew School is proud to announce that the school’s Junior Varsity Girls Basketball team is the winner of the Greater Hartford Parochial League Championship that was held on Sunday, February 25 at Holy Cross High School, Waterbury. The girls had a very successful season, going 8-0 in the regular season and then two wins in the tournament for the championship. We look forward to the Archdiocese of Hartford tournament on March 9, 2024 to see how far we can go.
The girls improved dramatically over the course of the year. We had three girls join the team with almost no prior basketball experience. Each of them grew and made valuable contributions to the team. Emma especially learned a lot and it showed in the championship game. Our leading scorer and rebounder was Natalie who was just determined on every play. Ava and Brooke played great offensively from the outside and were able to set the table for Natalie inside. One of our keys to the season was our stifling defense and Abby at the point of attack led to a lot of steals and offense off of that. Assistant Coach Jarrod Cox was great on the bench helping to explain X's and O's to the girls to try to gain every advantage we could. Our 45-7 semifinal win over Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Waterbury was a testament to defense and playing together. In the final, a 30-14 win over the Unified Schools of St. Mary Magdalene and St. John the Evangelist, Watertown/Oakville the girls were up 20-1 at halftime. It was nice to see the more experienced players constantly trying to get the other girls involved in the scoring while they all played great defense. Genesis, Emma and Brielle all got points for the Bulldogs and played great defense.
While our Bulldog athletics programs have a rich history, it has been eight years since St. Matthew School has won its last championship. It will be exciting to see a new banner on our gym wall on Welch Drive!
